Windsor Residence

Windsor is a small site with neighbours on both boundaries, which is the ordinary condition of building in this part of Melbourne and the reason the addition turns inward rather than out.

The new room is built in pale reclaimed brick with black steel glazing, wrapping a courtyard rather than facing a back fence. The garden is the whole point: Boston ivy has taken the return wall, and by autumn the brick disappears behind it.

Inside, joinery and the kitchen are in black — a deliberate weight against the brick and the light. The bathrooms are honed stone with brushed nickel tapware and steel-framed doors, detailed to the same lines as the external glazing.
